In 1862, Marqués de Riscal made a firm commitment to introduce Bordeaux methods in Rioja and, with the help of cellar master Jean Pineau, to produce barrel-aged wines, giving rise to the birth of the Médoc Alavés.

Risk all or how to bet on a woman to run the business in the 19th century
Juana Zavala y Guzmán, at the head of the winery after the death of her husband Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, registered the brand name Herederos del Marqués de Riscal and after the end of the Franco-Spanish tariff treaty, which caused a major crisis, she took measures to prevent the collapse of the local market.
In 1895, Marqués de Riscal wine was awarded the Diploma of Honour at the Bordeaux Universal Exhibition, becoming the first non-French wine to receive this recognition.

Risk All or how to build an avant-garde hotel in the heart of Rioja
In 1999 Marqués de Riscal took on a major challenge, the construction of an avant-garde hotel by the renowned architect Frank Gehry.
The winery is one of the pioneers of wine tourism in Spain, inaugurating the Marqués de Riscal Wine City in 2006, which offers a universe of experiences to enjoy wine through the five senses.
